Angry reactions have trailed a new YouGov poll that revealed a majority of Americans, including a notable portion of Republicans, support the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to disqualify former President Donald Trump from the state’s primary ballot.
According to a report by New York Post on Thursday, December 21, 2023, the flash poll indicated that 54% of respondents either “strongly” or “somewhat” approved of the court’s ruling, while 35% expressed disapproval. However, 12% admitted to being “not sure” about their stance.
The YouGov poll showed a clear divide along partisan lines, with a substantial 84% of Democrats supporting the decision compared to a mere 24% of self-described Republicans.
Self-described independent voters were also split, with 48% approving of the ruling and 35% expressing disapproval, as reported by New York Post.
The Colorado Supreme Court’s 4-3 ruling on Tuesday, citing the Insurrection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, claimed that Trump’s actions on January 6, 2021, amounted to “overt, voluntary, and direct participation in the insurrection.”
The decision was automatically stayed until January 4 to allow Trump’s legal team time to file an appeal to the US Supreme Court, a move they have already pledged to make.
Despite the legal proceedings, public sentiment remains uncertain about the ultimate fate of the Colorado ruling.
According to the YouGov poll, 43% of respondents predicted that the US Supreme Court would reverse the decision, while 23% believed it would be upheld. A significant 34% admitted to being unsure about the outcome.
However, the poll results, indicating majority support for disqualifying Trump, were met with skepticism and anger on social media, particularly on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Responding to the report shared by the New York Post on X, numerous users contested the authenticity of the survey, claiming it did not accurately represent the sentiments of the American people.
“No, they don’t, you just made that up. So typical MSM journalism,” commented @Texan__Pride on X, insinuating that public opinion is being distorted to fit a narrative against Trump.
This sentiment was echoed by X user @Brandon5859, who expressed doubt about the survey’s methodology, stating, “Suggests no research ever.”
More critics on X, including @Babble365, questioned the validity of the poll by suggesting bias, stating, “Who did you poll, indoctrinated leftists?”
This sentiment was reinforced by @james_jinnette1, who emphatically wrote, “There is ZERO chance this is accurate.”
