Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi revealed on Sunday that the majority of the new information emerging from Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the January 6th Capitol attack is coming from people who were once loyal to former President Donald Trump.
According to reports released by Fine- Tuned Finances on Jan. 17, 2024, Pelosi, who was the Speaker of the House during the riot and played a leading role in the impeachment and criminal inquiries into Trump, said that the damaging evidence is “overwhelmingly coming from the Republicans” in an interview with ABC This Week.
She cited the example of Dan Scavino, Trump’s former Deputy Chief of Staff and social media director, who reportedly cooperated extensively with Smith’s team and provided crucial insights into Trump’s state of mind and actions on the day of the insurrection.
According to an ABC News report, Scavino told investigators that Trump “wasn’t interested” in intervening to stop his supporters from storming the Capitol and disrupting the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. Scavino also shared several messages and videos that he received from Trump’s allies and advisers, urging him to persuade the president to call off the violence.
Pelosi said that Scavino’s testimony was “very important” and corroborated other evidence that showed that Trump was “derelict in his duty” and “incited” the mob to attack the Capitol. She added that Smith’s probe, which is expected to conclude in the next few months, will reveal the full extent of Trump’s involvement and responsibility for the deadly riot that left five people dead and hundreds injured.
Pelosi also praised the courage and patriotism of the other former Trump officials and associates who have spoken to Smith’s team, such as former White House Counsel Don McGahn, former Attorney General William Barr, and former Defense Secretary Mark Esper. She said that they have “put the country above their party” and exposed the “truth” about Trump’s “abuse of power” and “obstruction of justice”.
Pelosi said that she hopes that the findings of Smith’s investigation will be made public and that the Justice Department will hold Trump and his enablers accountable for their crimes. She said that the Capitol riot was “an assault on our democracy” and that the American people deserve to know the full story of what happened and who was behind it.
She also expressed her gratitude and admiration for the Capitol Police officers and the National Guard troops who defended the Capitol and the lawmakers from the violent mob. She said that they are “heroes” who “saved our democracy” and that they deserve “our respect and recognition”.
Pelosi said that she is confident that the Congress will pass the legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the law enforcement officers who protected the Capitol on January 6th. She said that this is a “small token of appreciation” for their bravery and sacrifice.
Pelosi concluded her interview by saying that she is optimistic about the future of the country and that she believes that the Biden administration and the Democratic majority in Congress will continue to work for the “common good” and the “well-being” of the American people.
She said that she is proud of the achievements that they have made in the past year, such as the COVID-19 relief package, the infrastructure bill, and the voting rights bill. She said that they will keep fighting for the “values and principles” that make America “a great nation”.
