Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) Chair Matt Schlapp has launched a scathing attack on the Democrat Party, accusing them of attempting to “rig the system” in the upcoming election.
In an exclusive interview with Newsmax on Friday, January 5, 2024, Schlapp condemned the Democrats’ sudden advocacy for states’ rights in the context of potentially banning former President Donald Trump from the primary ballot.
Reacting to comments made by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Schlapp expressed disbelief at the Democrats’ newfound interest in states’ rights.
He stated, “First of all, Democrats never argue for states’ rights — ever. And for them to now argue on elections that somehow states have the ability to decide who the Republican Party wants to be their nominee is outrageous.”
Schlapp went on to characterize the Democrats’ actions as a “coup” and unconstitutional, emphasizing the importance of the Republican Party’s autonomy in determining its nominee.
He highlighted the recent rulings in Colorado and Maine to remove Trump from the primary ballot and the subsequent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the matter as evidence of the Democrats’ attempts to interfere with the electoral process.
“The Republican Party sets the rules for who will represent them. We have 250 years of this,” Schlapp asserted.
“And the only thing that can bar or bridge it, right, is this question in the 14th Amendment.”
Pelosi’s remarks on CNN, in which she suggested that it was a “good idea” for states to consider the risk in the general election, drew Schlapp’s criticism as well.
He accused the Democrats of resorting to legalistic arguments to impede Trump and emphasized the need for fair and open elections in the country.
“This is like legalism, right? They’re trying to find anything they can to stop Trump and use a fake constitutional argument. Just let people vote in this country!” Schlapp exclaimed.
“You can put this all together. It sure looks like the Democratic Party is doing everything they can to rig the system so Republicans can’t have a fair election.”
Schlapp’s impassioned denouncement of the Democrats’ actions underscores the escalating tensions surrounding the upcoming election and the contentious debate over electoral integrity.
As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to address the issue, Schlapp’s outspoken criticism serves as a rallying cry for Republicans and a stark warning against what he perceives as the Democrats’ attempts to subvert the democratic process.
