Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco recently issued a stark warning – violent threats against Justice Department personnel have seen an “unprecedented rise” in the wake of Republican attacks targeting the agency as reported by Raw Story on Wednesday, December 27, 2023..
This escalation is extremely concerning, signaling growing danger from the MAGA movement, according to former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance.
“To see her feel the need…to give an interview and to be willing to talk about threats to prosecutors and others is really alarming.
It’s a real red flag about the position Donald Trump has placed the country in,” commented Vance about Monaco’s interview.
Monaco herself has extensive Justice Department experience, having previously served as a line prosecutor, head of the national security division, and White House national security advisor.
Her willingness to publicly address the violent threats demonstrates the gravity of the situation.
Former federal prosecutor Kristy Greenberg highlighted the recent disappearance of a classified binder belonging to Trump as another serious red flag.
The sensitive intelligence detailed Russian interference in the 2016 election – incredibly significant information that requires strict security protocols.
Yet this binder has vanished, with conflicting accounts on its whereabouts.
Such a security lapse with highly classified material is alarming and potentially illegal.
As Greenberg stated, “Willful retention of national defense information…that’s a felony.”
The binder’s disappearance also raises deeply troubling questions.
Who else gained access to its contents? Could critical intelligence assets have been compromised? What was the security clearance status of anyone else accessing this information?
So far, Trump allies have dismissed security concerns over the missing binder and threats against federal personnel as overblown.
But legal experts and national security veterans have sounded the alarm on activities that should be setting off red flags for Republicans as well.
The reality is that extremist rhetoric and security breaches involving classified intelligence pose real dangers to the country.
As we’ve seen with the January 6th attack on the Capitol, Trump’s inflammatory language can and does spur his followers to violence.
The threats against Justice Department officials and the missing classified intelligence binder are the latest examples of the former president continuing to endanger American democracy and national security.
Republican leaders have shown little interest in confronting these issues.
Their silence and inaction enable Trump and his most extreme supporters to keep escalating this dangerous behavior.
With the 2024 campaign cycle getting underway, the window for GOP officials to course-correct grows narrower by the day.
