Watchdog groups, led by Lawyers Defending American Democracy (LDAD) and Stand United Democracy Center, have issued a compelling call for the disbarment of former Trump attorney Jenna Ellis.
According to The Kansas City Star on Saturday, December 16, the demand comes in the aftermath of Ellis’s guilty plea to a felony charge in Georgia related to attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
The guilty plea resulted from Ellis’s involvement in post-election challenges to overturn the 2020 election. The sentencing included five years of probation, 100 hours of community service, a $5,000 restitution payment, and a mandated apology letter to Georgia citizens.
The joint letter addressed to Attorney Regulation Counsel Jessica Yates of the Colorado Supreme Court implores the commencement of a formal disciplinary proceeding leading to Ellis’s disbarment.
The letter underscores the violation of the oath taken by attorneys in Colorado to “employ such means as are consistent with truth and honor.” Watchdog groups argue that Ellis’s actions in late 2020, during the post-election challenges, were in direct violation of this oath.
During the sentencing, Jenna Ellis expressed remorse, stating, “If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges.”
Her tearful admission highlighted the complexity of her involvement and the subsequent legal fallout. The plea and admission, however, did not shield her from the growing calls for professional consequences.
Former Governor Steve Bullock (D-Mont.) and former Gov. Bill Weld (R-Mass.) are among the notable signatories supporting the call for Jenna Ellis’s disbarment.
The inclusion of former state attorneys general adds weight to the demand, emphasizing a bipartisan concern over the ethical implications of Ellis’s actions. The letter from watchdog groups highlights the breach of legal ethics by Jenna Ellis.
Attorneys in Colorado swear an oath to uphold truth and honor, making any deviation from these principles a serious matter. The disbarment plea reflects the commitment of the legal community to maintain the integrity of the profession.
Jenna Ellis’s apology letter to Georgia citizens, as mandated by the sentencing, adds a layer of accountability to her legal journey.
The legal community is closely watching as the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel assesses the gravity of the situation. The case serves as a reminder of the legal consequences that professionals may face when their actions breach ethical boundaries.
