According to Mediaite, former President Donald Trump displayed a curious misunderstanding of the time-space continuum in a social media post on Truth Social. In the post, Trump criticized Special Counsel Jack Smith for not filing charges three years ago, suggesting it was part of a plan to interfere with his campaign. However, the timeline presented by Trump doesn’t align with the events in question.
Special Counsel Jack Smith has filed felony charges against Trump, including allegations of mishandling classified documents at Mar-a-Lago and election fraud related to fake electors, which contributed to the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021. Trump has consistently denied wrongdoing, attributing the charges to what he calls “Election Interference” by the Biden administration.
In Trump’s post, he questioned why Jack Smith’s team didn’t file a lawsuit three years ago. However, this timeline places the hypothetical filing in December 15, 2020. At that point, the concept of fraudulent slates of electors had not yet materialized, and the events leading to the charges had not transpired.
TRUMP POSTED ON TRUTH SOCIAL:
WHY DIDN’T THE DERANGED JACK SMITH “TEAM” FILE THEIR LAWSUIT 3 YEARS AGO? BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO FILE IT RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF MY CAMPAIGN, THAT’S WHY. NOW, ALL OF A SUDDEN, THEY WANT TO RUSH. ELECTION INTERFERENCE!
The alleged mishandling of classified documents, another focus of the charges, occurred later. The National Archives had given Trump multiple opportunities to return documents in his possession, and a search of his Palm Beach residence in August 2022 resulted in the seizure of documents when he failed to comply.
Trump’s social media post reflects a misunderstanding of the chronological sequence of events and the nature of the charges brought against him by the Special Counsel. The charges are not lawsuits but involve serious allegations of federal crimes, some of which are related to events that occurred after the timeline mentioned by Trump.
