According to a report by GB News on Thursday, December 7, 2023, president Joe Biden finds himself under scrutiny from his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, where residents claim he has become “completely divorced” from the community.
The discontent among Scranton locals, traditionally strong supporters of the Democratic Party leader, sheds light on sentiment that could have implications for Biden’s political future.
Bob Cordaro, host of the Bob Cordaro Show on WILK Newsradio, shared the sentiments of Scranton residents in a recent interview with GB News.
Cordaro remarked, “We have a tradition here, a very heavy ethnic tradition of Irish Catholic Democrat voters who have traditionally voted for people like Joe Biden without really thinking about the policies and how they would affect them.”
Despite this historical allegiance, Cordaro expressed hope that locals have become disenchanted with the president, stating, “It holds true in many ways today because in a lot of places, the voting populace is older generally than the young.
People don’t vote as often. So these traditions still hold. And Biden has made Scranton his hometown.
He lived here till he was 10, granted, but he’s never done anything for us. I ask people all the time, well, what has he done for us? The answer is deafening silence.”
These sentiments emerge amid a notable dip in Biden’s popularity, as revealed by a recent Ipsos poll.
The three-day opinion poll, closing on Sunday and encompassing the views of over 1,000 voting Americans, indicated that only 40 percent of respondents approved of Biden’s performance as president, a marginal increase from 39 percent in November.
Biden’s public approval rating has been on a downward trajectory since August 2021, consistently remaining below the 50 percent mark.
The current rating, close to the lowest levels of his presidency, is at 36 percent, a figure reminiscent of mid-2022. This decline could pose a significant challenge for Biden’s potential re-election bid in 2024.
Discussing the changing dynamics, Cordaro highlighted Biden’s evolution, stating, “He’s used this [Scranton] to give him a brand, to create a brand as a working-class, middle-class champion.
Frankly right now, he is a champion of the elites. He’s a champion of the ultra-wealthy. He’s a champion of the regressive left.
He has completely divorced himself from the people of Scranton, their values, their ideas, what they believe. But tradition carries through somehow.”
Despite these critiques, Cordaro remained cautious about predicting electoral outcomes in Scranton, saying, “I can’t tell you he’s going to lose this county or he’s going to lose the city of Scranton because the tradition of voting here, in addition to a liberal left-wing base, that it does exist, we don’t know.
Trump won here narrowly in 2016 against Hillary Clinton, who also had Scranton roots. Her family was from here. So it’s difficult to say what will happen a year from now.”
