New York Times correspondent and CNN analyst Maggie Haberman recently called BS when asked, in a new interview, if it’s true ex-President Donald Trump doesn’t worry about going to jail via Mediaite.
It has been noted that Haberman was a guest on this week’s edition of The Run-Up podcast, hosted by New York Times national politics reporter Astead Herndon.
In keeping with the title of this week’s episode — “Is Donald Trump Going to Prison?” — Herndon asked about Trump’s dismissive attitude toward the prospect of jail when he was asked about it by NBC’s Kristen Welker.
Haberman — whose insights are formed by years of covering Trump — didn’t buy it:
ASTEAD HERNDON: You know, Kristen Welker on NBC asked Trump in a recent interview. Well, you know, do you worry about going to jail? He kind of brushed it off. Is there any reporting that speaks to his feelings of that question? Should we take him at his word when he says that that’s not something he thinks about?
MAGGIE HABERMAN: No. We should not take him at his word that this is not something he thinks about. He rails about the indictments privately, with frequency.
Someone once said to me that, you know, this was clear in the 2016 campaign that the sun was always shining in Trumpland. And that is very much what he’s all about. It’s all about the image and it’s all about what you project. Project Strength, Project Toughness Project nothing is bothering you. It’s how he got through bankruptcies in the 1990s. It’s how he has come back from every embarrassment and moment that would shame other people into changing their behavior.
And so he pours an enormous amount of energy into portraying himself as just fine. He is not just fine and he’s not just okay. He is extremely worried about these cases. And I think that that may become more apparent in his public behavior as we get closer to trial.
